Configuration management is the monitoring and logging of network as well as system configuration to manage network operations through hardware or software. Performance management is the internetwork performance optimization to maintain network with a standard level. Accounting management is to define network utilization to control users or groups. Fault management is the rectification and resolving the network issues with proper logging and notification to users. The last and the most important to keep network up and running is the security management, it applies on controlling the access level of network resources as per proper guidelines and authorization.

ICMP & SNMP
The two most important basics of network management are Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). We utilize ICMP for the information about network, used to send error messages without carrying application data .It helps us to keep informed about the host status, network congestion and latency. SNMP, is basically works with MIB to keep aware about the devices and servers over the network. Network management systems (NMS) utilizes SNMP trap to allow a network device. SNMP gets data from device after query the device with the help of NMS.
Being a part of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), it is an application layer protocol to facilitate exchange of management information between network devices.
